Open Question: Sun holiday with 2 year old advisable?

Hi all, Am thinking of going on holidays to the sun from Ireland wih my baby who will be 23 months when we will be travelling. Is this advisable? My partner seems to think it'd be more hassle than its worth as we'd be constantly running around after him and be nervous of the water etc. Is he right? I think it'd be fine, i mean people take their toddlers away all the time but i have heard conflicting opinions so just wanted somemore! To follow on from that, any suggestions of great family friendly hotels/apartments in Spain or any of the Islands? DOnt want to fly too far from Ireland i.e. not Cyprus, Greece, Turkey etc Thnaks...
